Anthurium can also be called a "Flamingo Flower" referring to the structure of the spathe and spadix. If you can provide high humidity Anthurium’s will reward you with a fantastic display of incredibly bright almost artificial looking flowers. The flowering can go on all year in a variety of reds, pinks and white. Heart shaped waxy leaves are a feature in their own right providing the perfect foil for this wonderful flower.

Anthuriums are often given to represent a deep romantic attraction. This is due to their beautiful yet unusual appearance – the glossy red spathe, and the open, heart-shaped face. The openness of its blossom is also said to represent hospitality, and many people present these flowers as gifts to friends and relatives.

The Kadupul Flower begins blooming just before midnight and dies within a matter of hours. Because of its extremely short lifespan, even in its native Sri Lanka, the flower is rarely seen. The Kadupal Flower has been mythologized throughout history, and is referred to as the legendary flower of the Celestial Nagas. However, because of its ludicrously short lifespan the flower’s monetary value is pretty much nil.

It is a rare and beautiful flower. It is distinct with its blue-green petals and navy-purple center. Green jade flower looks something like a fuschia plant on an acid trip.

The Corpse Flower

The Corpse Flower (Amorphophallus titanum)

Native to Sumatra, this rare and striking plant has flowers that reach up to 6 feet in height and 3 feet in diameter.  The Corpse Flower is found on low-lying rainforest floors in Indonesia and looks like something out of the prehistoric age (or perhaps a Star Trek episode).  It is considered the world’s rarest, largest, and most endangered flower.  Also known as Rafflesia, its survival is interdependent with the Tetrastigma vine.  Bodiless, stemless, leafless and rootless, it requires the vine for its nourishment and support.  It emits a pungent rotten flesh smell (hence the name, “Corpse Flower”) which attracts flies and beetles to pollinate it.  The flower blooms for about a week before dying.  For breaking the stereotype of all that a flower is or should be, the Corpse Flower comes in at number 1 for the world’s most rare flower.

This flower is also known as Cape Sundew. It is a carnivorous species feeding on insects. It has got strap like leaves which grow to about 3.5 cm long and 0.5 cm wide. These straps are covered with brightly coloured tentacles used to catch prey. Its flower is 5-petalled and pink in color.

The black bat flower is very beautiful and amazing. It is so very dark purple in color, so called black. Its bloom is over 12″ in diameter and it has got many “whiskers” which can grow to a length of 2 feet.

Youtan Poluo

Discovered by a Chinese farmer named Mr. Ding when he found it growing in his steel pipes, and then later by a Chinese nun named Lushan who found it growing under her washing machine, the mysterious Youtan Poluo has no scientific name and is made up of 28 pieces of minuscule, white sweet-smelling flowers measuring a mere 1mm.  It is a flower that has been mentioned in Indian myth and was believed to only bloom when the Sage King of the future visits the present world.  In Sanskrit the name means “an auspicious flower from heaven”.  The flower is also mentioned in Buddhist scriptures and botanical experts say that the flower only blooms once every 3000 years (now how would they know that?).  For blooming but every 3 millenniums, the Youtan Poluo flower is quite a wonder at number 2.
